The Mercury nominated Alt J, along with BBC Radio 6 were delighted to discover the band’s unique brand of indie folk. Reviews from Rolling Stone Magazine sat alongside folk magazine coverage. Radio features accompanied documentaries and highlights shows on television stations. Charting in the French download charts and selling bucket loads across Europe, ‘All We Have is Now’ firmly established the band as completely unique.
The following years saw awards in abundance. Opening 2018 as winners of album of the year at the BBC Scotland Trad awards, they went on to be finalists as Best Group at the BBC Radio 2 awards. In the same year, Belhaven Brewery got together with the band to award the first ever Belhaven Bursary for innovation in music. The bursary matches the Mercury Music Prize and was awarded in recognition of their unique and outstanding sound. That summer, the band also find themselves shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year – an award covering every genre of music from indie, blues and rock to pop, folk and the individual sound that is Elephant sessions!
After such a stellar year, the band may have been forgiven for resting on their laurels, but instead fans were treated in 2019 to a third full-length record, ‘What Makes You’. Displaying the musical tightness of artists like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and delving deeper into subtle electronic sounds, ‘What Makes You’ is the sound of a band maturing into a confident studio outfit, not just a juggernaut of a live band. However, it's the live version of the Elephants that TT fans will be treated to, and a treat it is.
‘The versatility of Elephant Sessions is its strength. Passionate about their culture and their origins, these Scots are using their instruments like weapons to destroy clichés...We love them’ - Rolling Stone Magazine
Elephant Sessions will play the main stage in the TT Fan Park on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June. The event is free to attend.
