CARL FOGARTY MBE - KING OF ROAD, TRACK AND JUNGLE
This week on The TT Podcast, hosts Chris Pritchard and Steve Plater are joined by a TT legend, four time World Superbike Champion and TV’s King of the Jungle, Carl ‘Foggy’ Fogarty.
The episode sees Foggy go back to where it all began watching his dad George race, and crash perhaps more than a few times, around the Mountain Course before getting Carl on a track bike himself after two years of motocross.
The Blackburnian also talks about losing his dad racing around Oulton Park and being disqualified in his first race for using an electric start but still continuing with an instant desire to become a world champion, something he would of course later achieve four times over.
Looking at his history in the TT, Foggy reminisces on his Isle of Man debut winning the newcomer’s event at the MGP before gaining his first TT victory a few years later, something that he still describes as an ‘unbelievable feeling’, despite some disappointment at the size of that first trophy. The legendary racer goes on to remember sharing a slightly unreliable Honda with Joey Dunlop and missing out on a lap record that he would later gain on a Yamaha during his now iconic 1992 battle against Steve Hislop.
It’s impossible to discuss the career of Carl Fogarty and not mention his incredible achievements in the World Superbike Championship and, in this episode of the TT Podcast, Foggy speaks on the balance between funding his endeavours on the Ducati and racing around the world in events like the World Endurance Championship before getting his career-defining contract with the Italian team and achieving the rare accomplishment of winning both the and a world championship.
The famously competitive and out-spoken rider also touches on the rivalries with some of his fellow superbike riders and the media personality he created as a result, something that he says he was happy to show the other side of during his stint in the jungle for ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.
Finally, despite climbing off the seat for the final time a while ago, Foggy talks about watching the top riders of today like Dean Harrison and Peter Hickman and what kind of a chance he thinks they’d stand racing on the less-refined machines of his time.
